Dubai: Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli’s health condition has stabilised after being admitted to a hospital in Thane, on the outskirts of Mumbai, in a critical state.

“Kambli is doing fine now. He is suffering from a urinary infection and was admitted to the hospital on Saturday. I visited him today... I suggested that he stay at the hospital for a month as he has several health concerns. Since someone is willing to bear the cost of his treatment, why not?” his friend, Marcus Couto, told the Times of India.

A message of gratitude

Kambli, in a video posted by PTI showing him lying on a hospital bed, said: “It is because of the doctor here that I am alive… I will do whatever he asks me to do and will be an inspiration.”

Starting from Sharadashram Vidyamandir, Sachin Tendulkar and Kambli forged a strong friendship and a record-breaking partnership in school cricket. Together, they represented India in the 1992 and 1996 World Cups.

“We always had a cricketing image of sir [Vinod Kambli] in our mind. It inspired us, so the entire team decided to do something for him. He keeps talking about his memories with Sachin Tendulkar,” a doctor at Akruti Hospital told PTI.

A history of health struggles

The former left-hander was recently diagnosed with brain clots during a medical examination, which the 52-year-old revealed during a conversation with YouTuber Vicky Lalwani.

“I was suffering from a urine problem — it was just flowing uncontrollably,” Kambli shared, painting a distressing picture of his ordeal. “My son, Jesus Cristiano, picked me up when I collapsed. My 10-year-old daughter and my wife came rushing to help. My head started spinning, and I fell. The doctor advised me to get admitted immediately.”

Past medical challenges

Kambli, while driving, suddenly collapsed after suffering multiple heart attacks in 2013. He was immediately rushed to the hospital by his wife and underwent surgeries.

“We have known each other since we were very young. Sachin did everything for me. He helped me and did a lot. I underwent two operations at Lilavati. He took care of it. He paid for both my surgeries — helped financially — in 2013.”
