Tuesday’s game provided the first instance of two Scottish players making 50s in the same World Cup innings.

  • New Zealand have dismissed opponents for less than 150 on on five occasions in the event but against Scotland, they have done it twice.
  • Kane Williamson has been in such terrific form this calendar year that during this match, he crossed 800 international runs in 2015. The next batsman behind him is Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara with a tally of 568 runs.
  • Only on two other occasions have teams lost four batsmen off the first ball in the same innings. Scotland now join Sri Lanka (vs Pak at Jamshedpur in March 1999) and Pakistan (vs England at The Oval in June 2003) as the holders of this dubious record.
  • New Zealand won against Scotland by a narrow margin of three wickets despite having 151 balls to spare. This incidentally is the narrowest victory by any ODI side with most balls to spare (of 150 balls or more) in ODI cricket history. Australia had previously beaten England by four wickets with 188 balls to spare at Leeds in 1975 and Sri Lanka did so likewise by 180 balls to spare against Australia at Brisbane in 2013.
  • New Zealand have now played five ODIs at the University Oval at Dunedin since February 2010 and have won all five games here. They beat Sri Lanka twice, and Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and now Scotland, once.
  • Scotland, who have played the 1999 and 2007 editions of the World Cup, have lost all their nine World Cup games. This is the worst performance by any side in WC history.
  • Preston Mommsen of Scotland was the fourth captain to be dismissed off the first ball in a World Cup debut game.
