Lamichhane, Pistorius, Tyson and OJ Simpson – what do they have in common?

Sandeep Lamichhane: A Nepal court on Wednesday sentenced their star cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane to eight years in prison for raping a young woman in Kathmandu, in 2022. He was also ordered to pay a fine. Lamichhane was released on bail and returned to the cricket field before being found guilty in December after a protracted trial. The verdict is open to appeal, but he has some illustrious but controversial figures to give him company from the sports world.

Oscar Pistorius: South African double-amputee Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on parole recently having served nearly nine years of a murder sentence for the 2013 killing of her girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, 37, will have to live under strict conditions until his full sentence of 13 years and five months expires on December 5, 2029.

Mike Tyson: The boxing legend, a controversial figure despite his iconic status, served three years of a six-year sentence in 1992 for raping a beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington. Returning to the ring, he was briefly banned from sport for biting rival Evander Holyfield's ear in 1997. Later in 1999, a road rage and assault case landed him another year in prison.

OJ Simpson: The legendary NFL player was arrested in connection with the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. Although he was ultimately found not guilty of the murders, Simpson’s reputation never restored. In 2007, Simpson faced new legal woes after a Las Vegas hotel room robbery gone wrong. Convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery, he received a 33-year sentence with a 9-year minimum. Released in 2017, Simpson remains a controversial figure.

Floyd Mayweather Jr: The boxing icon's career is also marred by multiple arrests for domestic violence since 2002. In 2010, convicted of assaulting ex-girlfriend Josie Harris in front of their children, Mayweather served 60 days of an 87-day sentence.
