In Pics: After sun-soaked summer breaks, UAE travellers can start thinking about cruises

Any UAE resident thinking of what next after a round of summer jet-setting to sun-dappled holiday destinations will have a few options to choose from. Especially if he or she is planning on taking to the seas.

This is exactly what a full cruise season offers as the industry tries to wrest back the initiative after a two-year hiatus brought on by you know what.

“Cruise lines are back with all sorts of promotional fares to stimulate demand,” said Ashok Kumar, Sales and Marketing manager at Cruise Master. “If forward bookings are any indication, it is going to be yet another fantastic winter season for cruising into and out of Dubai.”

A month or two ago, Dubai was swarming with cruise ships of all sizes. But the 2021 summer cruise season has concluded, and major liners will make a return in November.

That should not discourage anyone. From massive glaciers off the coast of Alaska to the sparkling blue waters of the Caribbean, travellers have options.

Indonesia: With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is one of the largest countries in the world. The South Asian nation offers views of volcanoes, tropical beaches and untouched jungles. Indonesia-bound cruises, which typically sail for 11-15 nights, cover several ports and countries in the region. Options include voyages between Bali and Malaysia, or Sydney and Singapore and the cost ranges from $1,000-$2,000 (Dh3,673 – Dh7,346).

Galápagos Islands: Lying in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are the 60 volcanic rock isles that make up the Galápagos. The only way to really see the islands is by boat, and there are plenty of tours lasting from a few days to a few weeks. A 5-day cruise of the ecotourism destination can cost about $3,000 (Dh11,000), but there are packages starting from $1,000 (Dh3,600).

Alaska: This region is full of natural wonders and abundant in wildlife. A typical cruise will be between $600 (Dh2,203) and $5,000 (Dh18,400) per person.

Iceland: The ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ offers both volcanically active hot spots and massive glaciers. Depending on the package and duration, an Iceland cruise can cost up to Dh16,000.

Danube River: This cruise will take guests through multiple countries in Europe since the river passes through Austria, Germany, Hungary, Romania and many other countries. During the peak season, a seven-night Danube cruise can cost around $671 (Dh2,460) per person, per night.

The Caribbean: One of the most famous cruising destinations in the world, this region offers beautiful beaches and cultural and historical sites. A seven-night Caribbean cruise with a major liner will cost more than $600 (Dh2,200).

The Mediterranean: One of the world’s leading tourism destinations includes countries such as Italy, Greece and Egypt. There are 6- to 9-day cruises that can cost between $500-$1,300 (Dh1,800-Dh4,800). The Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November to avoid the winter months.
