Dubai: In a major development for the K-pop industry, Mark Lee, one of the most prominent members of NCT, will be leaving the group after his contract with SM Entertainment concludes, the agency confirmed in an official statement released on Friday, April 3.

SM Entertainment stated that after extensive discussions about his future direction, both parties mutually agreed to end his exclusive contract. As a result, Mark will conclude all activities related to NCT, including work with subunits such as NCT 127 and NCT Dream.

End of a decade-long journey

Mark debuted with NCT in 2016 and quickly became one of the group’s most recognisable members, known for his rap, songwriting and performances across multiple subunits.

Over the years, he was active in several units including NCT U, NCT 127 and NCT Dream, making him one of the most active members within the NCT system. His departure marks the end of nearly a decade with SM Entertainment and the NCT brand, during which he played a key role in the group’s global success.

Having debuted at a young age, Mark Lee quickly developed a loyal following and became known as one of the most multifaceted members of NCT, contributing not only to performances but also to songwriting, production and creative direction, with many fans considering him the face of the group.

In a letter posted on Instagram, Mark Lee confirmed that he will be starting a new chapter as his 10-year contract comes to an end, sharing an emotional message with fans. The letter, originally written in Korean and later translated, focused on gratitude and personal growth. “I debuted with NCT U on April 9, 2016, and now that it’s April 2026, ten whole years have already passed,” he wrote.

Explaining his decision, he said he had spent a long time thinking about his future and felt “a strong desire to fully dive into” his personal dreams. He also acknowledged the shock fans may feel, writing, “I fully understand that this change can feel like a huge shock and even a source of hurt… That’s why my heart feels really, truly heavy.”

He ended the letter by thanking fans and the group, adding, “My beginning was SM, NCT, and Czennies...I will never forget where I started”

A significant moment for fans

Mark has long been considered one of the central figures of NCT, particularly because he was active in multiple units simultaneously and often served as a bridge between different group lineups. His departure therefore represents a major transition period not only for the group but also for fans who have followed NCT since its early years.

Many fans are particularly wondering how Haechan his close friend and group member is responding to his departure and what it means for the group’s future activities.

Following Mark’s announcement, the NCT members have also took to his Instagram to show their support. Jeno wrote, “Our leader hyung!! Let’s be happy,” while Jaemin added, “Baby, don’t be sad, I’ll give you a kiss. Love you.” Haechan simply commented, “iloveyou,” and Chenle left a heartfelt, “Hwaiting,” expressing encouragement as Mark begins his new chapter.

Although fans and NCT members have been overwhelmingly supportive, Mark’s departure has left a sense of sadness, with many sharing messages of love and encouragement as he begins this new chapter.
