Navaratri: A festival of fasting, festivities and family time

The festival of Navratri is very special for us. Apart from symbolising the triumph of good over evil, it is time for devotion, reflection, and celebration of the nine forms of the deity Durga. Navratri reminds me to stay connected to my roots and to reflect on the values that the festival represents, like strength, love, and resilience. This nine-day festival is celebrated with immense fervour in our family. We follow the tradition of setting up a small altar in our home, which is beautifully decorated by us. During these nine days, we offer prayers, observe fast and take part in traditional celebrations, including dance performances.

It is these traditions and rituals that have strengthened our familial bonds, bringing us closer to each other. From planning the menu to our festive attire for each day of the festival, we look forward to it all. However what we enjoy the most is Garba and Dandiya dances when our family and friends come together to dance and rejoice. The lively music and well choreographed dance moves along with prayer and devotion ensure the festivities transcend generations. I would love for my sons and their families to maintain these values and rituals, even if modified to suit modern times. It’s about staying connected to the essence of the festival and passing that cultural heritage on to future generations.

And what about food?

In our home, we prepare simple but flavourful food that aligns with the fasting traditions. Sabudana khichdi (a dish made with sago), vrat ke aloo (stir-fried potato made specifically during fasting), kuttu ke pakore (buckwheat flour fritters), and fruit salads are some staples. We also make sweets like coconut barfi and singhare ke ladoo, which are made with ingredients that are allowed during fasting. Every meal is prepared with care and devotion, mindful of the spiritual significance behind fasting and feasting. And since, all of us are conscious of our diet and fitness, we focus on light, nutritious meals that are filling yet healthy. Instead of deep-fried foods, we opt for roasted or steamed variations. Incorporating fruits, nuts, and simple ingredients ensures that our energy levels stay high without compromising on health. Additionally, we make sure to stay active by continuing regular walks or light exercise, even during the festivities. It’s about balance and maintaining the spirit of devotion without overindulgence.
