Solar Impulse 2 lands in Oman, starts journey to India

Aircraft arrives in Muscat after just over 12 hours of flying before taking off towards subcontinent

Dubai: The Solar Impulse 2 aircraft had taken off from Oman bound for India on Tuesday, on the second leg of its journey around the world.

It landed successfully in Oman's capital Muscat after completing the first leg from Abu Dhabi of its journey on Monday night.

The first flight, piloted by André Borschberg, one of the founders of the project, took off from Abu Dhabi at 7.12am UAE time on Monday and arrived in Muscat at 8.17pm.

The aircraft was checked and stored for maintenance overnight in Muscat. It started flying again on Tuesday morning at 6am to Ahmedabad, India.

Bertrand Piccard, the second pilot and co-founder of the project, will pilot the aircraft's next journey, which is expected to take about 20 hours.

Solar Impulse 2 landed at Muscat International Airport in Oman, completing the longest flight of Si2 to date. Pilot André Borschberg waited until sunset and the ground-level turbulence was reduced before landing the aircraft. The controls will soon be handed over to Bertrand Piccard for the second flight to Ahmedabad, India.
