Pakistani security forces have tightened security in the restive port city of Karachi, especially at diplomatic missions and hotels on fears of terrorist assaults coinciding with the first anniversary of the September 11 strikes in the United States.

"There is credible information that they (terrorists) might try to hit at hard and soft targets to make their point," Maj. Gen. Salahuddin Satti, director general of paramilitary Sindh Rangers, told reporters yesterday.

Diplomatic missions, government departments, American food chains and hotels could be their prime target, he said.

Satti said extremists Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan and Harakatul Mujahideen Al Alami, connected with Al Qaida and the Afghan Taliban, are top among the list of suspected groups.

There is a possibility of the Indian spy agency RAW's (Research and Analysis Wing) penetration in the extremists groups, he said.

Satti said at least 75 "dedicated members" of Al Alami group are absconding and security agencies are working on various leads to break the terrorist network.

"The way they have left their houses show that they are involved in terrorism," he said.
