The Goa government is working on an ambitious plan to safeguard the interests of Goans working abroad, mostly in the Gulf region. Speaking to Gulf News on Monday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the plan is likely to be in place by December.

Around 50,000 Goans are working in the Gulf on a contractual basis and their remittances make a major contribution to the economy of the state, after tourism and mining.

Parrikar said: "Many non-resident Goans face a number of problems when it comes to their property and taking care of their aged parents and other dependents. We plan to form a separate cell to deal with such issues."

He also sought the cooperation of the various overseas Goan organisations to achieve the goal.

Goans based in the Gulf have been demanding reservation of more seats for their wards in professional colleges. Parrikar promised to look into the issue.
