India: Netflix India issues statement after getting dragged into Citizenship Amendment Act debate on Twitter

Streaming giant Netflix on Saturday denied it was offering free six-month subscriptions to users who would dial a phone number being circulated on Twitter with the fake claim. "This is absolutely fake." They tweeted. Netflix's response went viral. But what was this number?

The toll-free number had set Indian Twitter abuzz. From free Netflix subscription to pizza, it was advertising a toll-free number that was launched by the BJP on Thursday, for tweeps to endorse the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The BJP had launched the toll-free number on Thursday for people to endorse the Citizenship Amendment Act by giving a missed call on the number, ahead of the party's 10-day mass contact drive from January 5.

A quick search of the toll free number 8866288662 on Twitter, shows the various offers that just require tweeps to call the number.

Social-media users were encouraged to call the toll-free number but the exactly function of the line was concealed

The blandishments included free data plans, free watches and even the opportunity to meet singles.

Tweeps who saw through the lies were quick to call BJP supporters out, for promoting fake offers.
