Virgil Abloh tributes: Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, BTS, Drake and more mourn designer's death

The death of Virgil Abloh on November 28 from a rare form of cancer at the age of 41 has reverberated around the world as people mourned the visionary US fashion designer. A post on his official account said that he had been privately battling cardiac angiosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, since 2019. He was known for his massive influence on pop culture and streetwear thanks to his brand Off-White, and he also made a name for himself at Louis Vuitton as head of menswear design. Priyanka Chopra Jonas posted a picture of Abloh and wrote the caption: “Gone too soon.”

Filmmaker Karan Johar took to his Instagram to write: “This is just heartbreaking. RIP! What an immensely talented fashion force. He will be sorely missed.”

Actor Harshvardhan Kapoor wrote an emotional note mourning the designer. “You never know what someone is going through so be kind... Virgil chose to work through his illness and was inspiring millions all the way up till he took his last breath that is so inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time,” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s going be very hard to look at all the things I own that he’s created the same way but I will wear them with pride and always have great admiration and respect. The words he wrote on those Air Force 1’s make me feel so much. ‘Virgil was here’... he will be forever.”

Harshvardhan’s sister, actress Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, shared the announcement of Abloh’s passing on her Instagram stories and added the caption: “This is so sad. I feel for his family.. So young and dynamic. Rest in Peace.”

Sonam’s husband Anand Ahuja had a personal connection to the news. The sneaker boutique owner shared a picture of himself with Abloh and wrote: “Unafraid to pursue & realize the future he dreamt of.”

On Twitter, rapper and ‘Sound of Metal’ actor Riz Ahmed thanked Abloh for “all you did to support so many & how you pushed us to reimagine what’s possible.” “Rest in Power,” Ahmed tweeted. “[G]one too soon but your legacy lives on. Stretched culture & the changed the game.”

“Rest in Power, King,” singer Lenny Kravitz echoed. “You made an indelible mark on this world.”

Singer and producer Pharrell Williams remembered Abloh as “a kind, generous, thoughtful creative genius”. “My heart is broken,” Williams tweeted. “Your work as a human and your work as a spiritual being will live forever. ... You’re with the Master now, shine.”

Supermodel Hailey Bieber paid rich tribute to Abloh, who designed the wedding dress she wore when she married singer Justin Bieber. “Virgil completely changed the way I looked at street style and fashion, the way he looked at things inspired me deeply. I will never be able to fully express how grateful I am to have known him and worked with him, from walking on his runways to having him design my wedding dress and all the other amazing moments in between, I felt he was always rooting for me,” she wrote online. “He was someone who always brought life, charisma, love and fun to any situation, and every room he walked into. A once in a generation creative mind that is so rare and I’ll never forget his impact. We love you Virgil.”

Drake shared a series of picture of him and Abloh, writing on Instagram: “My plan is to touch the sky 1000 more times for you…love you eternally brother 🕊thank you for everything.”

K-Pop stars BTS, who are ambassadors for Louis Vuitton, tweeted: “RIP Virgil Abloh, you will be missed. It was an honor to work with you. A true creative genius.”
