Dubai: Authorities in Pakistan have arrested a suspect after a disturbing video circulated on social media, showing a man and a woman being killed for marrying without family approval. Provincial officials acted after the footage, reportedly filmed in a remote desert location, gained widespread attention online.

A case has been registered against those involved, as officials confirm a tribal council ordered the killings. The local government is under increased scrutiny following criticism from human rights groups over the continued occurrence of such unlawful killings.

Balochistan authorities reported that a couple—names not released—was executed last month by a local tribal council. A viral video shows the incident in a desert area with people gathered around several vehicles.

After identifying them, police arrested one suspect, and Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti confirmed that a criminal case has been filed against all involved.

The video depicts a woman receiving a Quran and instructing a man to walk with her before she is shot. Speaking in Brahavi, she says that only her execution is permitted. Despite being shot twice at close range, she remains standing until a third shot causes her to fall.

The footage shows both her and the man on the ground as more shots are fired. While authorities have yet to confirm the video's authenticity, it has ignited widespread outrage.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has condemned honour-based violence, noting in its 2024 report at least 405 honour killings, primarily targeting women. Critics attribute the persistence of these crimes to societal pressure, family interference, and tribal customs that undermine legal protections.

Honour killings are illegal in Pakistan, but enforcement is inconsistent, particularly in rural areas. Families often arrange or forbid marriages based on tradition, and defiance can be deadly. Human rights organizations urge authorities to strengthen laws, ensure prompt investigations, and raise awareness to reduce these incidents.
