UAE records over 84,000 red-light violations in 2024

Jumping red lights continues to be a serious problem on UAE roads. According to a recent report from the Ministry of Interior, a total of 84,479 red-light violations were recorded across the country in 2024.

Police and traffic authorities have repeatedly warned drivers about the dangers of running red lights. Despite their efforts, the numbers remain high, and red-light jumping was one of the leading causes of road accidents last year.

The UAE Ministry of Interior’s statistics show that these violations led to 271 traffic incidents nationwide. Abu Dhabi saw the highest number of such accidents (153), followed by 111 in Dubai. Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain each reported three cases, while Sharjah recorded one incident.

Tough penalties for red-light violations

Under UAE traffic laws, jumping a red light comes with serious consequences. Offenders face a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points and vehicle impoundment for 30 days.

On top of this, some emirates have stricter local rules. For example, in Dubai, drivers must pay Dh50,000 to release an impounded vehicle, according to Decree No. 30 of 2023. In Abu Dhabi, too, the fine for releasing an impounded vehicle is also Dh50,000 under Law No. 5 of 2020. If the fine isn’t paid within three months, the vehicle can be sold at a public auction.

Authorities urge caution

Traffic police across the UAE continue to remind drivers that red-light jumping puts lives at risk. They are urging motorists to follow traffic rules and drive responsibly to keep the roads safe for everyone.
