Diving centre offers interactive session with apex predator
Abu Dhabi: If swimming with sharks was ever on your bucket list, here is a chance to strike it off. The Al Mahara Diving Center at Beach Rotana Hotel is hosting a shark diving workshop on January 26 and 27.
Conducted by Fernando Reis and Manuela Domingues from the Shark Educational Institute (an international non-government organisation) the one-of-its-kind event in the capital hopes to educate certified divers on responsible interaction with local species found in UAE waters.
Non-intrusive interaction
The programme will teach divers how to identify indigenous species like bamboo sharks, without being invasive and disturbing them in the water. Two dives will be conducted each day at the Al Dhabiyah shore where the depth is about ten metres in the hard coral areas.
“We hope that the community will learn more about the plight of this amazing apex predator and spread the message about why they are so important to the survival of the oceans. In February, we will conduct a few workshops titled Shark Talk for Kids,” said Kathleen Russel, founder of Al Mahara.
