The initiative aims to enhance maternal and infant health during the postnatal period
Abu Dhabi has rolled out a pioneering Integrated Postnatal Care Program that blends telemedicine, home visits, and outpatient services to support mothers and newborns in the weeks following childbirth.
Launched by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) as part of its Women and Children’s Health Strategy, the initiative aims to enhance maternal and infant health by ensuring timely, high-quality, and personalised care during the postnatal period.
New mothers will now have access to virtual consultations in the initial days after leaving the hospital. These sessions will help monitor both mother and baby, identify potential health concerns, and provide medical advice and reassurance when it’s needed most.
The program also includes follow-up appointments at the nearest hospital or primary health center—scheduled between 7 to 14 days and again at 6 weeks postpartum—to ensure ongoing support during recovery.
For mothers who experienced complications during pregnancy or childbirth, and for those whose babies have health challenges, two home visits will be provided—one shortly after discharge, and another within two weeks. These will be conducted by trained nurses or midwives, ensuring expert care at home.
Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of the postnatal period:
“The postnatal period is one of the most physically and emotionally challenging times in a woman’s life, yet it is often overlooked. This program puts maternal and newborn health front and center, offering a holistic support system that goes beyond hospital walls.”
She added that integrating telemedicine, follow-ups, and home-based care helps empower mothers while ensuring newborns get the healthiest start in life.
With this initiative, Abu Dhabi reinforces its position as a global leader in healthcare innovation, continuously raising standards for accessibility, personalized care, and health outcomes for families across the emirate.
