Labour housing inspection in Sharjah conducted to strengthen workers’ rights

Sharjah: The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) has carried out its third inspection of a workers’ accommodation facility in Sharjah.

The inspection is part of a series of ongoing field inspections designed to assess and improve the living and working conditions of labourers across the country.

Led by Noor Al Suwaidi, Member of the NHRI Board of Trustees, the delegation included fellow Board Members including Mohammed Al Hammadi and Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Noman, and Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, Secretary General of the Institution. They were joined by NHRI staff and labour rights specialists.

First-hand accounts

The inspection involved a comprehensive walk-through of the facility, as well as direct discussions with workers residing there. These engagements allowed the delegation to hear first-hand accounts of workers’ daily lives, providing essential insight for shaping policy recommendations aimed at strengthening labour protections in line with both UAE law and international human rights agreements.

Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, said: “These visits are not just observational exercises. They are an integral part of our mission to transform feedback into actionable improvements. By engaging directly with workers, we gain a clearer picture of the challenges they face and can develop targeted strategies to enhance their rights and well-being.”

Kruse also reaffirmed the NHRI’s commitment to conducting similar field visits across the Emirates, underscoring the Institution’s broader vision of inclusivity, responsiveness, and a proactive human rights culture. “Our work is rooted in the principles of justice, dignity, and respect in all spheres of life,” he added.

Established under Federal Law No. 12 of 2021, the NHRI is an independent legal entity with financial and administrative autonomy. Its mission is to promote and protect human rights and freedoms across the UAE, in alignment with the national constitution, relevant laws, and international treaties.
