Group’s use of biodiesel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions
Dubai: In a major step towards sustainable retailing, Abu Dhabi-headquartered LuLu Group has announced that its delivery vehicles are now running on biodiesel. The fuel is produced from used cooking oil collected across the retail major’s extensive store network in the UAE.
This innovative green initiative is the result of a strategic partnership with UAE-based clean energy firm Neutral Fuels. Waste cooking oil, a natural byproduct of LuLu’s daily food preparation operations, is being transformed into low-emission biodiesel.
This renewable fuel is now powering an increasing portion of LuLu’s delivery fleet, effectively reducing the group’s carbon footprint and reinforcing its commitment to a circular economy.
“This proves that practical, everyday actions can lead to measurable environmental benefits without compromising efficiency or service,” the group said in a statement.
Biodiesel, when compared to conventional diesel, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. LuLu’s eco-conscious switch aligns with the UAE’s broader goals on sustainability and climate action, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Beyond biodiesel, the group has implemented several other impactful eco-initiatives. The company has slashed plastic bag usage by more than 90 per cent, replacing them with a variety of reusable, environmentally friendly alternatives.
Reverse vending machines have also been introduced in stores to encourage customers to recycle plastic bottles and cans.
Further enhancing its green logistics credentials, LuLu uses advanced green chiller vehicles to transport perishable goods such as fresh produce and meat. These state-of-the-art vehicles are engineered to reduce emissions while maintaining high standards of food safety.
Together, these efforts form part of the group’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, aimed at minimising environmental impact.
