Programme will track greenhouse gases in industrial and energy sectors
Abu Dhabi: Major facilities in Abu Dhabi with significant carbon emissions will be required to monitor, report, and verify (MRV) their emissions annually through third-party assessments.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched the MRV programme for accurate tracking of greenhouse gas emissions, which can pollute the air. The programme seeks to standardise and improve the quality of emissions inventories across Abu Dhabi’s industrial and energy sectors.
The first reports are to be submitted in 2026.
‘Data transparency is vital’
Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General, EAD, said: “Data transparency is vital for evaluating climate policies such as carbon pricing mechanisms, which support Abu Dhabi’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 22% by 2027 and contributing to the emirate’s sustainable economic growth. We are proactively taking the necessary steps to align with national pathways toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”
Engineer Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, said: “The Department is committed to continuing its leadership role in fostering collaboration with all stakeholders to accelerate the energy sector’s transformation, build a sustainable future, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The MRV programme provides precise data necessary to track carbon emissions, ensuring transparency, building trust, and enabling effective climate action.”
Abdulnasser bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, said: “The MRV programme will help us meet evolving regulatory requirements while maintaining transparency, enhancing emissions tracking, and enabling data verification across our operations. This tool represents a significant step toward our ambition of embedding sustainability principles into everything we do and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”
