The big lesson from Marina Pinnacle fire? Always be ready for emergencies
Dubai: The fire that engulfed the 67-storey Marina Pinnacle Tower in Dubai Marina underscores why it’s essential to keep an emergency go bag ready at all times.
Residents affected by the blaze escaped with only the clothes they were wearing. Some were unaware of the fire until neighbours knocked on their doors or first responders arrived. They had barely any time to react, let alone gather their belongings.
In such situations, having a small kit with essential documents and supplies that can be grabbed quickly during an evacuation is incredibly helpful.
While the Dubai Civil Defence successfully evacuated more than 3,800 residents and even rescued pets such as dogs and cats, some evacuees are unsure whether any of their belongings, including vital documents like passports and tenancy contracts, have survived the fire.
“The firefighters did a commendable job, but I don’t know if anything from our belongings is left,” a resident said.
Experiences like this highlight the urgent need for residents to maintain a compact emergency bag placed in a visible and easily accessible spot, such as near the entrance or by the shoe rack. Residents with pets or children should include supplies for them as well.
In unexpected emergencies like fires, floods, or sudden evacuations, every second counts. Having an emergency go bag packed and ready can make all the difference between chaos and calm.
Here’s what your emergency kit should include:
Passports, Emirates IDs, and other important documents,
Copies of tenancy contracts and insurance papers,
A list of personal/emergency contacts,
Basic cash and/or debit/credit cards,
A whistle (yes, it’s extremely helpful),
A first-aid kit, medications, and hygiene items,
Flashlight, power bank, and spare keys,
Light and spare clothes,
Face masks, sanitisers, disinfectant,
Bottled water (check the expiry date and replace regularly)
For children: diapers, baby wipes, formula or snacks, comfort items (like a toy or blanket),
For pets: pet food and water, leash or carrier, vaccination records, and any medications.
