From dust to bloom: German artist explores nature’s transformation in Dubai

Dubai: A German artist’s exploration of how nature is transformed, fragmented and reshaped by human intervention opened in Dubai on Thursday, bringing together a series of large-scale oil paintings that move between photorealism and abstraction.

From Dust to Bloom by Stephan Kaluza, his first solo exhibition in the UAE, opened on Thursday morning at JD Malat Gallery Dubai in Downtown Dubai and will run until October 31.

Known for his large-scale paintings of forests, oceans and other natural environments, Kaluza uses apparently photographic images as a starting point before gradually disrupting their clarity. At first glance, his works resemble highly detailed landscapes, but closer inspection reveals forms that fragment, dissolve and become increasingly ambiguous.

Natural world

The exhibition examines the changing relationship between the natural world and human activity, without presenting environmental damage in a literal or documentary way.

Instead, Kaluza introduces a sense of intervention through shifts in colour, composition and form, inviting viewers to question where an observed landscape ends and an imagined one begins.

A dialogue with Dubai

For Kaluza, Dubai provides a particularly relevant setting for the exhibition because of the city’s transformation from desert landscape into a modern metropolis.

“Dubai is practically predestined as a location for this exhibition because the city itself is the ultimate manifestation of the title From Dust to Bloom, a highly modern, blooming metropolis that was literally wrestled from the desert dust,” Kaluza said.

“Here, the human will to shape and control nature meets reality in its most extreme and impressive form. Showing my work here feels like a productive dialogue.”

The title of the exhibition refers to the artist’s interest in cycles of destruction, decomposition, regeneration and renewal.

“The inspiration comes from observing cyclical processes in nature. I am fascinated by the idea that matter never vanishes, but rather transforms permanently,” Kaluza said.

In his interpretation, “dust” represents the past, decomposition and destruction, while “bloom” points towards life, renewal and the capacity to flourish despite adverse conditions.

The works therefore move beyond a straightforward depiction of landscapes, using transformation itself as a central artistic theme.

Between reality and abstraction

Kaluza’s paintings occupy a space between recognisable landscapes and abstraction. The initial impression of photographic realism gives way, on closer inspection, to disrupted forms and shifting compositions.

This visual tension is central to the exhibition, encouraging viewers to reconsider familiar natural environments and the forces that shape them.

Jean-David Malat, founder of JD Malat Gallery, said the exhibition reflects the gallery’s interest in bringing Kaluza’s work to a city where the relationship between the built environment and nature is particularly visible.

“We are delighted to bring From Dust to Bloom to Dubai,” Malat said. “What drew me to Stephan’s work is the tension between precision and ambiguity: his oil-on-canvas paintings appear almost photographic, yet gradually dissolve into abstraction.”

“His exploration of nature as something continually transformed by human intervention feels especially relevant in Dubai, a city shaped by rapid change and an evolving dialogue between the natural and built environments,” he said.

Who is Kaluza

Born in Bad Iburg, Germany, in 1964, Kaluza studied art, art history and philosophy. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, photography and writing.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in museum and private collections, including the Arp Museum, Gwangju Museum of Art, Ludwig Museum Koblenz and the François Pinault Group collection.

The Dubai exhibition brings together works that reflect his continuing interest in the transformation of natural landscapes and the processes through which destruction can lead to renewal.

From Dust to Bloom is on view from September 17 to October 31, 2026, at JD Malat Gallery Dubai.
