Suspect called up manager, threatened to hit him and hurt his family if he refused to pay Dh80,000
Dubai: A mechanic has been accused of threatening to hit a general manager inside his office and hurt his family if he did not pay him Dh80,000.
The 34-year-old Kosovar mechanic, A.M., was said to have called up the Australian manager’s office and threatened to beat him and hurt his family if he did not pay him Dh80,000.
Records did not mention why the suspect requested the money.
The defendant entered an innocent plea when he showed up before the Dubai Court of first Instance on Sunday.
“I did not threaten him,” the Kosovar was heard telling the court.
The Australian testified to prosecutors that the incident took place when he was driving his car at 1.35pm in December.
“He called me while I was driving and said that he would do something bad to me and to my family if I did not pay him the money. I was scared and had to hire special security to guard my house and my company as well,” he claimed.
A Filipina secretary claimed to prosecutors that the defendant called up her boss’ [the Australian] office and asked to speak to him.
“The caller turned out to be A.M. He sounded very angry and demanded to speak to my boss. When I told him that he was not in, he said ‘tell him that I called and if he does not call back, I [the suspect] will go to the police’,” she testified.
The suspect was cited admitting to prosecutors that he phoned the claimant and demanded Dh80,000 and that he also called his secretary.
A ruling will be heard on May 12.
