Abu Dhabi: The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the region, will celebrate its first anniversary on Sunday with a series of grand celebratory events and traditional rituals.

The hand-carved, majestic temple in Abu Mureikhah was inaugurated on February 14, 2024, by Mahant Swami Maharaj, the present spiritual guru of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, along with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the first ‘Patotsav’ – a traditional sacred ritual – to mark the anniversary will be held on Sunday.

Since opening its doors to the public, the temple, hailed as a ‘spiritual oasis of harmony,’ has welcomed thousands of visitors who come to offer their prayers and admire the intricate designs of sculptures and stunning architecture. More than just a place of worship for Hindus, the iconic landmark serves as a space for learning about the values of different faiths, religions, and cultures as well.

According to the temple’s spokesperson, the festivities on Sunday will include activities ranging from religious ceremonies to cultural performances, attracting people from the UAE and beyond.

“We invite everyone to join us in marking the first anniversary of the BAPS Hindu Mandir, a historic and spiritual landmark in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Together, let us express our devotion, gratitude, and joy in celebrating this milestone that unites cultures and inspires generations.”

What to expect?

The main ceremony of the day will begin at 5:30 am with ‘Patotsav’ rituals involving all seven deities. The two-hour ceremony will be held with the blessings of Mahant Swami Maharaj and under the supervision of the temple’s head, Brahmaviharidas Swami.

Later, from 5 pm to 8 pm, there will be several cultural performances and special prayers held at the Swaminarayan Ghaat. Through devotional songs and hymns, classical dance, and storytelling sessions, the performances will offer visitors a culturally rich and immersive experience.

The first anniversary celebrations will conclude with ‘The Day of Gratitude’ ceremony on February 16. From 5 pm to 7 pm, the temple will celebrate the vision and leadership that made the BAPS Hindu Mandir a reality.

“The events are open to people of all nationalities. We request interested individuals to register online,” the spokesperson added.
