Area Guide: Motor City

Overview

Previously considered an out-of-the-way, in-development area of Dubai, Motor City has taken shape and slowly come into it’s own as a laid-back and spacious residential neighborhood. And if you're lucky enough, you might even get to see McLaren’s former world champion Jenson Button jogging along at the Dubai Autodrome. The Briton often comes to the UAE ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in order to get acclimatised to weather conditions. 

 

 

In addition to exits from Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Umm Suqeim Road, the newer Hessa Street interchange also makes it accessible to residents and visitors, with work commuters now connected to Media City, TECOM, Barsha and Mall of the Emirates. A small diversion can easily get you onto Al Khail Road too.

 

Motor City is composed of motorsports-themed centers, sleepy business towers, townhomes and low-rise apartment complexes with landscaped walkways. Being a good distance from the hustle and bustle of the big city, this gated community stays active with its own adventurous pastimes like karting and laser tag. However, there aren't any bars, cosmopolitan restaurants or hotels here and the lack of a metro connection makes driving an absolute necessity. Taxis from here will cost you.  

 

Though relatively affordable, a recent increase in demand here has sent rents soaring. It is sought after for its community environment, with families and youth wandering the strip of dining spots along Uptown Motor City (Foxhill), with the proximity to Dubai Sports City providing access to sports tracks and children's centres. 

 

Where is it located?

 

 

Motor City borders Sports City and is adjacent to Studio City and Arabian Ranches, with direct access from E311 Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. From afar, drivers can see the Sports City cricket stadium. Mall of the Emirates is a 10-minute drive.

Taxi Cabs can be hailed at times from Uptown, but it's best to book a taxi far in advance as they can take time to arrive and find their way. Call on 04 2080808

 

Traffic and Parking

Traffic can build up on narrow streets like the Uptown area. It can’t quite support the traffic entering the area due to businesses popping up and ongoing construction of residential areas. When travelling via Hessa Street at rush hour, it can take around 15 minutes to get out and can get congested again upon entering Motor City.

A massive, packed department-cum-grocery store filled with fresh foods, household products and other essentials that make up for the lack of a nearby mall. You might cringe at the final bill though, so beware. There is a Carrefour supermarket next door within City Center Mall in the International Media Production Zone (IMPZ)
