Sony VPL-BW120S Projector

Sony’s new VPL-BW120S is being dubbed their ‘home theatre’ projector. With a strong brightness setting, HD connection and the new ‘Short Throw’ technology, it certainly looks promising.

The projector has a white outer body, fairly standard on most of the devices. The rear has connectivity ports for S-Video, RCA, VGA and HDMI. The lens on the projector is noticeably large: as it must be to serve out a brightness of 2600 lumens which make the projected image visible in just about any lighting conditions.

Most traditional projectors display a bigger image as you move them further from the screen. The VPL-BW120S projector uses the new “Short Throw” technology that doesn’t require you to place it too far from the screen to deliver a large image. With a distance of just 1.3m between the projector and the screen, it is able to display a 100 inch image. This eliminates the need to wall mount the project at a distance.

The projector also features built in speakers. They may work well for short videos for a presentation, but not for watching a movie. Then you are better off using dedicated speakers, as the sound from the projector can be flat and weak.

The projector supports an image resolution of 1280 x 800 which seems okay for an entry level projector. However, a HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 would make this a much more attractive purchase.

Perhaps one of the best features about the projector is its eco mode, that can give the lamp a life of about 6,000 hours. This would mean you will not be spending more on the projector for a very long time.

The VPL-BW120S is a good entry level projector. Priced at Dh3,999, it provides an excellent level of brightness, suitable for use at home. Its lack of 3D or portability won’t bother home users, who will find value in the image quality and Short Throw technology.
