The three-months long lockdown in Mahboula has been lifted from Thursday

Since April 9th, Mahboula has been under a total lockdown. The three-month lockdown was lifted on Thursday 5am.

Traffic at one of the main entrances of Mahboula as the area is no longer under total lockdown. Mahboula residents are able to travel freely in and out of the area.

Mahboula was fenced with barbed wire to ensure that nobody was going out or coming in.

Checkpoints were set up to ensure that whoever was entering or exiting Mahboula had a permit. Permits were mainly granted to company workers that were deemed essential like, electricians and maintenance professionals.

Mahboula has an approximate population of 200,000 people, majority of which are expats, according to the Public Authority for Civil Information. The statistics also show that 86 per cent of the population are male.

Although the area was under lockdown, residents were able to roam freely within the area. For three months, restaurants and shops were catering to the residents of Mahboula only.

According to a May report by Bloomberg, 45 per cent of companies polled in Kuwait have shut down operations, 22 per cent are experiencing difficulty and 80 per cent won’t be able to cover more than six months of fixed costs.

70 per cent of the 4.3 million population in Kuwait are expats.
