Latest: UAE Public Holidays 2020 for public and private sectors

New Year (one day): January 1 (Wednesday) was a public holiday for working UAE residents. As with all public holidays, you should get a day off or get compensatory leave-in-lieu. Your company can also choose to give you compensation (150 per cent of the day's pay) if you have to work.

29 Ramadan-3 Shawwal (5 days): Residents are set to get five calendar days off for Eid Al Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan. While the exact date depends on the traditional method of moon-sighting, the Hijri calendar shows May 22 (Friday) to May 26 (Tuesday) as the most probable dates - a possible long weekend.

9 Dhu al Hijjah (one day): Arafat Day immediately precedes Eid Al Adha celebrations and is expected to fall on July 30 (Thursday). The date is subject to change and depends on the moon-sighting.

10-12 Dhu al Hijjah (3 days): Eid Al Adha marks the conclusion of the important worship of Hajj or pilgrimage to Makkah and the most probable dates in 2020 for this celebration are July 31 (Friday) to August 2 (Sunday). Combined with Arafat Day, this would mean a long weekend.

Hijri New Year (one day): August 23 (Sunday) was announced as the holiday in 2020 to observe the Islamic new year - a three-day weekend for many residents.

The Prophet's Birthday (one day): The UAE has marked October 29 (Thursday) to observe Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) birthday - another three-day weekend for many residents.

Commemoration Day (one day): This day, to be observed on December 1 (Tuesday) recognises the sacrifices and dedication of Emirati martyrs, who have given their lives in the UAE and abroad in the field of civil, military and humanitarian service

UAE National Day (2 days): The UAE will celebrate its 49th National Day in 2020 and public holidays will be on December 2 and 3 (Wednesday and Thursday). Coupled with Commemoration Day and the weekend, this means a long holiday for many residents
