In Pictures: Dubai’s Burj Khalifa marks 11th anniversary

2005: Aerial view of the Burj Khalifa under construction. Construction started in January 2004 and it was officially inaugurated in January 2010. The tower took 22 million man-hours to build.

2006: Burj Khalifa, which will be the world’s tallest tower when completed, reached 80 levels with a height of 277 metres.

2007: Burj Khalifa used a record-breaking 330,000 cubic metres of concrete; 39,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement; 103,000 square metres of glass; and 15,500 square metres of embossed stainless steel.

2007: Construction under way on Downtown Dubai and Business Bay.

2008: The Burj Khalifa is one of the most iconic buildings in the world. Its height, its unique architecture and all of the records it has broken.

2008: Standing tall the design of Burj Khalifa is inspired by the desert flower Hymenocalis. The tower also incorporates patterns that are embodied in Islamic architecture.

2009: The building, developed by Dubai-based property developer Emaar, has 160 habitable levels — the most of any building in the world.

The 828-metre skyscraper was inaugurated on January 4, 2010, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who also revealed its new name. Instead of the anticipated Burj Dubai, it was named Burj Khalifa.

The building, which houses residential units, corporate offices and fine dining venues, overlooks the Dubai Fountain. The tower has 10 world records to its credit, including the highest observation deck, tallest service elevator, largest LED illuminated facade and the highest base jump from a tower.

The highest Lounge in the world opening its doors to the public at the Burj Khalifa, setting a new record in Dubai. The Lounge, a unique dining and leisure concept, will take up three levels of the world's highest building: the 152nd, 153rd and 154th floors.
