World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 each year to take measures to protect the environment and tackle issues like global warming and climate change. It brings together people from all walks of life with the sole aim of preserving this planet for future generations. An array of activities takes place in every corner of the world to spread the message to save the environment.

On the eve of World Environment Day, Our Own High School, Al Warqa’a, Dubai proudly hosted the first Inter School Environment Competition (Ecophilia). The objective was to instill in young students the significance of saving the environment and providing avenues to showcase their creativity and sensitise them towards their role in preserving the environment.

The event was graced by Mr Hamdan Al Shaer, Director of the Environment, Department of Dubai Municipality and Shaikha Saif Al Mansouri, Senior Cultural and Awareness Officer of Dubai Municipality. Fourteen schools participated in the gala event. The categories of the competitions were fancy dress, Prakriti Utsav (dance), best creations out of waste, drawing and painting.

In each of the categories, the students displayed tremendous talent as they depicted the importance of preserving the planet and the perils the earth is facing at present. They were judged by versatile artists and experts in the respective fields.

The event was a grand success. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by students from different schools gave hope that the young students will take all efforts to conserve the most precious resources we have.
