UAE long weekend of 2022: Ultimate guide to the coolest camping spots

Another long weekend is on its way in the UAE and what better way to celebrate then head out for a bright night under the stars? Pack up those sleeping bags, easy-to-eat food and camping gear and head out. Here’s a look at the picturesque locations on offer in the country.

Head to Al Qudra for artificial lakes, surrounded by sand dunes that make a perfect backdrop for a selfie at sunset. Since it’s so far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it also offers clear views of the stars. A barbeque under a star-lit sky is one for the bucket list.

If you are a fan of desert games, head to Big Red (Bidayer). It’s the largest sand dune near the city so it’s perfect for a quick getaway. You can go dune bashing, quad biking and sand skiing here. Be careful though, it’s a popular spot, you don’t want to be part of someone else’s dune bashing experience.

Head out for a scenic drive this weekend on the Masafi-Dibba road where the landscape shifts from desert plains to rocky mountains. Whether you want to spend the day hiking, mountain biking or just relaxing with a picnic, this is a spot you can truly enjoy.

Hang out at Fujairah’s Snoopy Island for Instagrammable views – it’s named after a famous boulder shaped like the toon’s hat – beachside chilling and a spectacular view of the starry sky. There are available campsites around the area for free. You just need to find your own perfect spot.

Sun and sand are calling your name. Camping On Jebel Jais Ras Al Khaimah: Want a no-frills experience? Pitch your tent here and set up your own barbecue station. Wake up early to see the brilliant dawn break.

Want a real desert experience? Head to Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Oasis. Rubh Al Khali, as it’s popularly known, is a frame of undulating dunes under a sparkling night sky. Just make sure you have a working GPS – getting lost here is very, very easy.

Looking for a relaxed outing with sun, sad and blue waters, Dibba is the place for you.

The new Jebel Hafit Desert Park in Abu Dhabi, on the eastern flank of the mountain, includes historic remains from the Neolithic period (8,000 years ago) and the 5,000-year-old tombs that were excavated at the request of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1959. It is now an iconic attraction offering activities for every kind of visitor, including biking, hiking, with trails led by professional guides and a camping area, where you can pitch up your own tent.

About an hour out of the city of Sharjah you’ll find a small town called Mleiha, which acts as a base for those looking to hike or camp. Look out for Fossil Rock - an archaeological site teeming with marine fossils.

Camping on the shores of Umm Al Quwain brings with it a host of ocean adventure from swimming to kayaking and more. Carry your binoculars and keep your phone on camera mode – you are sure to see some beautiful birds while you are out there.

Hatta is home to glamping opportunities with great Insta-value. You could also just set up your own tent and enjoy the rocky terrain. Things to do while here include looking at Hatta Dam and heading out kayaking.

Al Aqah Beach in Fujairah offers great views to The Gulf of Oman and there are nearby wadi’s and historic buildings, perfect for some exploring.

Bear Grylls Explorer Camp: Take your pet along to this camp in Ras Al Khaimah where you can sleep in cabins created out of containers. When it gets nippy in the evening, you can warm yourself around the campfire, toast marshmallows and tell stories. There’s no slumming it on these premises that come complete with modern conveniences such as private bathrooms and showers.

Damani Lodges, Hatta: Relax in a cosy hut overlooking the Hatta Wadi over the weekend. There are modern bathrooms and it’s perfect for a family of four. Take along some board games, which you can play while chilling out on the deck.

White Sands Beach: For a budget-friendly camping spot, head to the White Sands Beach. Nestled between the Fins and the Wadi Shab, this beach is ideal for a serene camping experience. You can also indulge in water sports such as paddle boarding and diving, or enjoy a night of star gazing. However, make sure you stay protected from sea urchins, known to be seen in these waters.

Lahbab: This popular camping destination is better known for star gazing, dune bashing and barbecue evenings, especially for new campers. The thrilling aspect for dune bashing here is the ‘Big Red’, a 300-foot high sand dune. If you’re brave of heart, head to the ‘ghost’ village Al Madam for a night of camping.
