Iftar review: Sofra bld

The aroma from Sofra bld restaurant resembles the beckoning hand from Tom and Jerry as one comes down the majestic stairs of the Shangri-La hotel for iftar.

Immediately, you see crowds of people gathering at iftar tables filling up the 350 seats of the restaurant’s hall.

Waiters and servers stand on the lookout for anyone needing assistance and as the call to prayer is heard, people can be seen ending their fast with dates and water or lining up for the grand iftar ahead.

As usual, Sofra bld’s signature ‘look’ is that of variety. Moroccan, Chinese, seafood and grill stations are available; in the middle, a chocolate fountain flows seemingly endlessly and delicious ice cream is served alongside waffles and multi-coloured mini-cakes.

Not only is the food plentiful and varied, it is also impressive as different types of delicacies are made and served with such authenticity.

During my frequent visits to Sofra bld I have seldom been left disappointed.

In fact, the buffet goes so above and beyond that on the sidelines, pickles, olives, gummy bears and little personal touches are added for people with specific tastes.

On the rare occasion that you do not find something you like, you can always request that the waiter ask the chef whether your cheese samosas or penne Arabiatta can be made.

Of all the different foods, I feel that Sofra bld excels in its grills, seafood and pastas. The desserts are almost all stuffed with scrumptious joy.

This Ramadan, Emirati baking sensation Bader will be serving his desserts exclusively to Sofra bld with a very Emirati twist guaranteed to please both the adventurous and the traditional.

Going to Sofra bld is worth the money but a big rule to remember is to reserve ahead because not only does it make finding a table easier, it also helps the chefs prepare the right amount of food ahead of time to minimise food wastage.
