Weekend watchlist: 10 TV shows and movies to check out

‘Free Guy’ (UAE cinemas): Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds breaks away from franchises to star in this action comedy. He plays good-natured bank teller Guy, who realises he is a background character in Free City, an open world video game.

‘Shershaah’ (Amazon Prime Video): Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra takes on his bravest role yet. In war biopic ‘Shershaah’, the actor plays army officer Vikram Batra, who died in the Kargil War. Malhotra plays a double role, also portraying Vikram’s twin brother Vishal.

‘Old’ (UAE cinemas): Famed horror director M Night Shyamalan returns with a new mind-bending flick. This thriller is about a family who are vacationing in a tropical location. However, the quiet beach they are at for a few hours is causing them to age rapidly.

‘Rogue Hostage’ (UAE cinemas): Hollywood veterans Tyrese Gibson and John Malkovich star in this action movie about a former Marine who has to rescue his daughter and other people who are taken hostage at his stepfather’s store.

‘The Kissing Booth 3’ (Netflix): Indulge in a bit of teen romantic comedy with the third instalment in this franchise. In this new movie, Elle is about to start college but she’s faced with a big decision: whether to relocate across the country with her boyfriend Noah or keep her promise and attend college with her best friend Lee.

‘Beckett’ (Netflix): John David Washington, of ‘Tenet’ fame, returns to the action genre with this new movie out on August 13. Washington stars as an American tourist Beckett who is on vacation in Greece. However, he becomes the target of a manhunt after an accident.

‘Navarasa’ (Netflix): Navarasa is an anthology film that brings to life nine short films about the nine human emotions — anger, compassion, courage, disgust, fear, laughter, love, peace and wonder.

‘Breathe: Into the Shadows’ (Amazon Prime Video): In this thriller, Abhishek Bachchan stars as a father who finds out that his six-year-old daughter Siya has been kidnapped. The criminal needs him to kill a man before his daughter is returned to him.

‘Cruel Summer’ (Amazon Prime Video): Mystery abounds in this series about two teenagers in the 1990s. Kate, a popular girl from a tiny Texas town, gets kidnapped. Then, a girl named Jeanette goes from a shy outsider to the most loved girl in town, taking Kate’s place.

‘Ramy’ (Starzplay): Award-winning actor Ramy Youssef draws from his own life for this acclaimed show about a man named Ramy, a first-generation Egyptian-American, who is on a spiritual journey.
