Whether you are new to the UAE or unaware of mandatory contributions, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) must know how to pay Social Security System (SSS) contributions, claim benefits and apply for loans.

The SSS is a government-run social insurance program in the Philippines that offers social security benefits to workers across the private, professional, and casual sectors.

In the UAE, OFWs can conveniently manage their SSS membership online. Members can pay contributions, access benefits like retirement, sickness, and maternity claims, and apply for loans using the SSS website or mobile app, ensuring financial security while working abroad.

Paul Erik Manalo, SSS' Acting Head of International Operations, says, "The Social Security System (SSS) plays an essential role for Filipinos by offering a safety net and social protection that secures financial stability during critical times such as illness, maternity, disability, retirement, death, funeral and unemployment."

"By becoming a member and remitting regular contributions, individuals can access a range of benefits and support, assisting them and their families in overcoming difficult life situations," he added.

Here are the essential things to know as a new member and contributor of SSS:

Applying for an SSS number

  1. If you do not have an SSS number, effective July 15, 2020, you must apply for one online through the SSS website by clicking https://www.sss.gov.ph/become-an-sss-member/ or using the SSS Mobile Application and selecting "OFW" as your membership category.

  2. The online application will prompt the applicant to provide their preferred My.SSS user ID, which will be used for future SSS online transactions.

  3. If a previously issued number exists, OFWs can start contributing using the same SS number.

How to be an active member

To maintain active membership in the SSS, OFWs need to consistently and regularly pay their contributions. Regular payments not only ensure membership status but also make members eligible for a range of benefits. OFWS need to stay updated on contribution rates and deadlines to keep their active status.

Any missed payments may result in a loss of benefits or affect their overall coverage. By meeting their contribution requirements, OFWs can fully leverage the protective measures provided by the SSS and secure their financial future while working overseas.

Creating an online SSS account

  1. Head to the SSS website: Visit www.sss.gov.ph.

  2. Go to the member portal: Click "Member" under "Portals" under My.SSS registration page

  3. Choose registration preference: You can choose one of the eight options listed, which typically involve verifying your SSS information.

  4. Follow the instructions: Complete the registration form by populating the required personal information and address details, following the on-screen instructions.

  5. Review the data: Double-check and verify if all information provided is correct.

You can also download the SSS Mobile App for easier access.

Paying for monthly contributions

OFWs have several convenient options for managing their SSS contributions.

  • They can use the SSS Mobile Application for quick and easy transactions. Additionally, they can utilise several e-wallet services.

  • For those who prefer traditional methods, OFWs can make their contributions at designated SSS branches through a representative acting on their behalf.

  • They also have the option to pay at select UAE partner bank branches and collection partners that cater specifically to SSS OFW members.

  • A range of online payment services is also available, providing yet another flexible avenue for managing contributions.

This diverse selection of payment methods ensures that OFWs can easily meet their SSS obligations, regardless of their location or preference.

Filing for benefits for the Top 3 claims: Retirement, sickness and maternity

  1. Applicants need to log into their My.SSS account using their credentials.

  2. After logging in, go to the 'Benefits' tab.

  3. Applicants can find subsections for various benefits, including unemployment, sickness, retirement, maternity, disability, death, and funeral. Each subsection provides detailed information on the eligibility criteria and application process for that particular benefit.

  4. Once they select the relevant category, applicants must complete the required information.

It's essential to carefully read the instructions for each benefit to understand any additional information that may be necessary. Furthermore, applicants must submit the required supporting documents, depending on the claim application, to ensure a smooth review process. After all the required information and documents are submitted, applicants can track the status of their application online through the My.SSS portal, keeping them informed throughout the process.

Filing for a loan

Log in to your My.SSS account: Go to the My.SSS website or SSS Mobile Application, and log in using your registered username and password

  1. Navigate to the Loan application page: Once logged in, go to "Loans" and then select the loan type to be applied for.

  2. Fill out the Loan Application form: Applicants will be guided through the application form, where they must provide details about the desired loan amount, disbursement method, and other relevant information.

  3. Submit the application: Review all the details entered and submit the application.
