Cairo: Three families have contracted the new coronavirus from an infected woman during a gathering, the Saudi Health Ministry has reported, as the kingdom is battling to contain the spread of the highly contagious ailment.

The unidentified woman transmitted infection to the unsuspecting families through handshakes and hugs, the ministry added, according to online newspaper Sabq. Nine infection cases have been detected, including three hospitalised.

In recent weeks, Saudi Arabia has stepped up efforts to contain the spread of the virus amid steady increases in infections.

Authorities have repeatedly urged the people to abide by preventive measures including a ban on large gatherings and observance of social distancing rules. The kingdom so far has recorded 132,048 coronavirus cases including 1,011 deaths from COVID-19.
