Dubai: The Kuwaiti court of appeal on Monday issued a ruling sentencing pro-Islamic former MP and lawyer Nasser Al Duwailah to six months in prison after being convicted of insulting the UAE. Al Duwailah has also been ordered by the court to pay a fine of 2,000 Kuwaiti Dinars.

The appeals court quashed an earlier not guilty verdict given by the criminal court in February. The case against Al Duwailah was filed by the UAE’s Attorney General over the abusive comments he made on his Twitter account in 2014.

Al Duwailah’s appeal was quashed by the court in a ruling over his abusive tweets against the UAE.

A few months prior to the ruling, Nasser Al Duwailah was summoned by the Public Prosecution over his abusive comments against the UAE, and was later released on a bail.

Al Duwailah is known for his sympathetic positions and support for the Muslim Brotherhood, which is classified as a terrorist group by several GCC countries. He was also referred to the judiciary on charges of insulting Saudi Arabia through social media platforms.
