Abu Dhabi: Beachgoers in Abu Dhabi must look out for sea snakes during the winter, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has urged.

In a social media alert, the emirate’s environment sector regulator said that these marine creatures can be found on Abu Dhabi beaches as temperatures fall.

Known as ‘bu jinn’, they are usually placid and harmless, unless provoked. They swim to shallow waters to feed and breed and can be seen swimming in open waters or close to beaches, especially on Saadiyat Island and at Abu Dhabi Corniche.

The EAD added that people who encounter sea snakes should avoid touching them or trying to catch them. In case of a bite, they should seek medical attention immediately.

Residents should also inform the beach management if they spot a sea snake, or contact the Abu Dhabi Government Call Centre on 800 555.
