Dubai: Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Thursday sacked his finance minister over charges of corruption, state media said.

The Emir’s decision follows the arrest of Ali Shareef Al Emadi over alleged abuse of power and misuse of public funds.

The minister was arrested as per the state attorney general’s order. He is being questioned over allegations of embezzlement, abuse of power and crimes related to the public sector, according to a statement carried by state news agency QNA said on Thursday.

An investigation is underway, QNA added.

Al Emadi has been the minister of finance since 2013. He sits on the board of Qatar’s $300 billion sovereign fund.
