Cairo: Kuwaiti citizens account for 99 per cent of employment in the Kuwait Oil Corporation, Oil Minister Khaled Al Fadel has disclosed, according to a local newspaper.

There are 681 Kuwaiti employees against 26 expatriates working on contracts in technical jobs that require expertise not yet available at the local market, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Anba said, quoting Al Fadel.

He added that 148 contract non-Kuwaitis are doing marginal and auxiliary jobs, which are difficult to be done by nationals.

The minister was answering a question from a lawmaker on Kuwaitisation of jobs.

The corporation has ended contracts of 38 expatriate employees since 2017, according to the minister. Seventy-two Kuwaitis have since been appointed in the corporation, he said.

Foreigners make up nearly 3.4 million of Kuwait’s 4.8 million population.

In recent months, there have been increasing calls in Kuwait for curbing foreigners’ employment to redress the country’s demographic imbalance.
