Dubai: Dubai Police launched a sweeping inspection campaign at Fishing Harbour 3, targeting jet ski rental companies as part of a broader effort to enforce maritime safety standards.

The move also aims at enhancing regulatory compliance across the marine leisure sector.

The operation conducted by the Ports Police Station led to the confiscation of 32 jet skis, many of which were found to be severely damaged, previously involved in accidents, or deemed unsafe for use.

Additionally, authorities issued 39 safety and operational violations for breaches including failure to follow designated routes.

Lax practices uncovered

Brigadier Dr. Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, Director of the Ports Police Station, said that the inspections are part of an ongoing initiative to create a secure maritime environment for all users.

He revealed that several administrative violations were uncovered during the campaign, including a lack of electronic documentation, unclear rental procedures, and failure to comply with safety protocols.

These issues prompted immediate warnings, with comprehensive reports submitted to the appropriate licensing and legal authorities for further action.

He urged all rental operators to conduct regular maintenance checks, implement clear safety procedures, and ensure rental agreements fully align with legal requirements

“We are committed to safeguarding our coastal waters and the public who enjoy them. Strict enforcement and accountability are key to achieving that goal, “” Brigadier Al Suwaidi said.

Hefty fines

Brigadier Al Suwaidi outlined the penalties for various infractions:

  • Dh5,000 fine for using unlicensed watercraft or operating in Dubai waters without proper authorisation

  • Dh1,000 fine for operating watercraft with expired licenses

  • Dh5,000 fine for renting out unfit equipment or obstructing inspection efforts
