Abu Dhabi: In a bold step toward advancing sustainable mobility, Abu Dhabi is set to install 1,000 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 400 strategic locations across the capital and surrounding regions.
The initiative comes as the emirate sees a sharp rise in EV adoption, with more than 15,000 electric vehicles registered in the first quarter of 2025 alone at a 60 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

The announcement was made by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, as part of a broader strategy to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050.

Brand name
The new stations will operate under the unified brand name ‘Charge AD’. The network will cover Abu Dhabi Island, the Al Ain region, and Al Dhafra. A phased plan is in place to increase the number of stations annually in line with demand.

How much it will cost
Announcing a significant investment in electric vehicle infrastructure, Abu Dhabi Mobility said that several operators have been appointed through public-private partnership (PPP) contracts to manage the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of the charging stations across the capital.
The network will feature standardised tariffs, set at Dh0.70 per kilowatt-hour for AC chargers and Dh1.20 per kilowatt-hour for fast DC chargers.

Strategic investment
Dr Abdulla Hamed Al Ghfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, noted that the  strategic investment in EV infrastructure demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
“We believe that the establishment of a unified and extensive electric vehicle charging network is a fundamental pillar in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and enabling a smarter, more sustainable community. This supports Abu Dhabi’s vision of a future with reduced emissions and greater energy efficiency."

Beyond public stations
The network will expand through partnerships with hotels, shopping centres, and other key venues, ensuring convenient access to charging points across urban and suburban areas.

Abu Dhabi Mobility has set an ambitious target of making 50 per cent of vehicles on the emirate’s roads electric by 2040, aligning with the UAE’s broader sustainability goals and its Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
