Abu Dhabi targets 25 per cent of all trips via self-driving vehicles buy 2040
Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi is accelerating its journey toward a smart, sustainable future with the expansion of its self-driving vehicle service, TXAI, now connecting Yas and Saadiyat Islands to Zayed International Airport.
Announced by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi Mobility, this move marks a major milestone in the Emirate’s long-term strategy to make 25% of all trips driverless by 2040.
The initiative builds on the success of TXAI’s pilot phases, which began in 2021 and have already logged over 30,000 trips covering 430,000 kilometres — all with zero reported traffic incidents. The expansion to the airport not only broadens service coverage but also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s ambition to be a global leader in autonomous mobility.
A greener, safer future
The self-driving taxi service is part of a wider environmental and safety-focused agenda. According to Abu Dhabi Mobility, autonomous transport is expected to cut carbon emissions by 15% and reduce traffic accidents by 18% by 2040. These targets align with the Emirate’s vision for a connected, AI-driven transport ecosystem that’s both efficient and eco-conscious.
“Expanding TXAI to Zayed International Airport represents a strategic step toward building a fully integrated smart mobility network across Abu Dhabi,” said a spokesperson from AD Mobility.
Public awareness
To support the roll-out, Abu Dhabi Mobility is focusing on public awareness campaigns aimed at increasing adoption. Currently, each autonomous vehicle includes a safety operator on-board to intervene when necessary — reflecting best practices seen in global pilot programs. Full driverless operation is envisioned in later stages, pending further infrastructure readiness and regulatory approvals.
The autonomous taxis are equipped with state-of-the-art AI systems and are available through a dedicated mobile app, which enables users to book rides, track vehicles in real-time, and enjoy a seamless transport experience.
AI-powered
By integrating artificial intelligence, Abu Dhabi aims to boost operational efficiency and reshape public transportation. Abu Dhabi Mobility continues to test and refine autonomous vehicle systems in collaboration with industry partners, ensuring full adherence to traffic regulations Regulatory framework
In tandem with the physical roll-out, Abu Dhabi has introduced a comprehensive regulatory framework to support the growth of its autonomous vehicle sector.
This includes:
Specialised insurance models
Enhanced digital infrastructure
Secure communication networks
Licensing regulations for autonomous fleets
