Dubai: Dubai’s International City has become a hotspot for authentic Pakistani cuisine with the grand reopening of Lala Darbar, a restaurant that combines the passion of cricket legend Shahid Afridi with his deep love for his homeland’s flavours.

Afridi himself was on hand to celebrate the relaunch, surrounded by fans and media, offering a glimpse into his vision of sharing traditional Pakistani dishes with the world. From savoury biryanis to fragrant seekh kebabs, Lala Darbar promises an unforgettable dining experience, now enhanced by a fresh, contemporary ambience.

Afridi’s vision for Lala Darbar

Afridi, known globally for his explosive batting and dynamic career on the cricket field, has always carried a deep connection to his roots. Born in Khyber Agency, Pakistan, Afridi became one of the sport’s most celebrated all-rounders, famous for his record-breaking centuries and his pivotal role in Pakistan’s 2009 ICC T20 World Cup victory. But beyond his cricketing achievements, Afridi is also known for his philanthropic efforts, using his platform to support education, healthcare, and underprivileged communities through the Shahid Afridi Foundation.

Lala Darbar, Afridi’s brainchild, seeks to bring the rich and diverse flavours of Pakistani cuisine to the global stage. “The restaurant’s mission is simple: to share food that’s made with love, reflecting the heart and soul of Pakistan’s culinary traditions,” Afridai told media at the opening ceremony. He added that the newly renovated space offers a fusion of bold Pakistani design with modern touches, creating an inviting and family-friendly atmosphere.

A message of peace

Afridi also shared his thoughts on the political climate between Pakistan and India. Emphasising the need for peace, he called for greater cooperation and understanding between neighbours. Afridi reinforced the belief that sports and politics should remain separate, focusing on fostering diplomatic dialogue to resolve differences.

The food brings people together

Afridi spoke fondly of the restaurant’s offerings, which include slow-cooked biryanis, sizzling seekh kebabs, and the comforting matka chai served in traditional clay cups. “The taste of the food here is unbeatable for its quality and price,” he said, inviting everyone to visit with their loved ones.

A family affair

The success of Lala Darbar would not be possible without the collaboration of Afridi’s partners: Saleem Karsaz, Imran Paracha, Fahad Abdullah, and Hamdan Yaseen. Together, they’ve worked to make Lala Darbar a place where the essence of Pakistan is captured in every bite. “Good food is close to a Pakistani’s heart, and we believe Lala Darbar will remind you of Pakistan with every meal,” they said in a statement.
