UAE officially recognises Prophet’s Birthday as a public holiday under Cabinet resolution.
Dubai: The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) in Egypt has indicated that Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday is expected to fall on Thursday, September 4, 2025, corresponding to 12 Rabi Al Awwal 1447 AH, based on astronomical calculations.
Dr Ashraf Tadros, Professor of Astronomy at the institute, confirmed on Sunday that the full moon of the Islamic month of Safar will occur on Saturday at 10:57 am, marking 100 per cent lunar illumination. With Safar expected to last 29 days, the date for the Prophet’s birthday is considered nearly certain.
“The moon will appear fully round and will rise exactly at sunset, remaining visible throughout the night until sunrise,” Dr Tadros said. While the naked eye cannot detect the precise moment of lunar fullness, he noted that the moon will appear nearly full from August 9 to 11.
He also highlighted that this full moon is traditionally known among Native American tribes as the Sturgeon Moon, named after the large freshwater fish commonly caught during this period. It is also referred to as the “Corn Moon” or “Green Corn Moon.”
The birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is one of the most significant religious occasions for Muslims globally and is typically marked by cultural and spiritual celebrations.
In the UAE, it is recognised as an official public holiday under the Cabinet Resolution Concerning Public Holidays. This year, with the expected date falling on a Thursday, the holiday could potentially be moved to Friday, in accordance with government policy.
Article (2) of Cabinet Resolution No. (27) of 2024 allows the UAE government to shift public holidays—excluding Eid—to the beginning or end of the week. If this applies, UAE residents may enjoy an extended three-day weekend, making it one of the year’s most anticipated breaks.
