Noise pollution is a public menace and Dubai is committed to ensuring it’s stemmed as much as possible. To ensure daily road rides are calm journeys, Dubai Police is rolling out new noise detection radars that will identify perpetrators. “These radars monitor modified vehicle noise, excessive horn use, and loud in-car audio systems,” said Dubai Civility Committee in a tweet.

What do the new radars do?

  • They detect noise from vehicles, which means blaring music from speakers or rattling engines will be under scrutiny.

  • They also note the excessive use of car horns.

  • Noise offences detected by the radars include modified exhausts, loud audio equipment, and unnecessary honking.

Moreover, advanced radars have also been introduced that detect and analyse noise sources with the help of artificial intelligence.

What happens to those with noise violations?

If you do not follow proper road etiquette and your car challenges the safety and calm on roads, the authorities could hold you liable for:

  • Fines up to Dh2,000 with 12 black points

  • Vehicle impounding, with release fees set at Dh10,000

Authorities in Dubai have said the number of these noise radars is set to increase in the coming months, covering more neighbourhoods and discouraging noise pollution.
