Dubai expands noise radar network to curb loud driving

Dubai: Dubai Police has announced a major expansion of its noise radar system across the emirate, with fines of up to Dh2,000 for vehicles that cause excessive noise. The move aims to curb loud and disruptive driving that disturbs residents and visitors.

The rollout supports Dubai’s goal of becoming one of the world’s quietest and most civilised cities, while strengthening the emirate’s aesthetic and behavioural standards.

Police said the number of noise radars will increase gradually in the coming months to cover more neighbourhoods. The expansion is part of the work overseen by the Dubai Civility Committee, launched under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council.

The project is a key pillar of wider efforts to improve quality of life and promote public tranquillity. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations at Dubai Police, said the smart radars have already proven effective in detecting modified vehicles and those exceeding environmental noise limits. The devices measure vehicle noise accurately, identify the source, and capture video evidence when limits are breached. They also detect unnecessary horn use and excessive sound from in-car audio systems.

He described the system as a ‘qualitative leap’ in Dubai Police’s smart traffic technologies, helping to reduce nuisance behaviour and ensure a calmer, safer road environment.

Noise offences detected by the radars include modified exhausts, loud audio equipment, and unnecessary honking. Penalties remain at Dh2,000 and 12 black points, with vehicle release fees set at Dh10,000.

Al Mazrouei stressed that the aim is not to issue fines but to promote respectful road behaviour. Maintaining peace and quiet, he said, is a shared responsibility that supports Dubai’s image as a modern, sophisticated city.

Dubai Police will continue monitoring disruptive vehicles through patrols and smart systems, along with awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of noise pollution and its impact on public health.

“Dubai Police deploys the latest smart technologies to monitor noise levels and enforce the law precisely, as part of efforts to uphold the city’s image and ensure public comfort,” Al Mazrouei said. He added that the initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader strategy to improve quality-of-life indicators and adopt innovative solutions that support safety and environmental wellbeing.
