14-km stretch is being rehabilitated in phases over 2–3 months
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is putting the finishing touches on a major upgrade to the busy Emirates Road, with the full reopening just days away on August 25, coinciding with the start of the school year.
A key 14-km stretch of Emirates Road, linking Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has been rehabilitated to enhance driving comfort, ensure a safe commute and reduce traffic snarls.
The project, carried out across 2-3 months in carefully planned phases, included meticulous resurfacing of both fast and slow lanes, with advanced technologies such as laser detection vehicles used to identify and repair structural issues. Multiple layers of asphalt were applied in heavy-traffic areas, promising a long-lasting, comfortable driving experience.
“It’s a relief to know about the updates on upgrades,” said Ahmed, a daily commuter from Sharjah to Dubai. “I’m looking forward to a smooth ride without the constant jams.”
Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at the Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted that the rehabilitation was necessary after inspections revealed a decrease in the Pavement Quality Index due to heavy vehicle traffic.
“This is a major maintenance project,” he said last week, noting that the PMI was detected as 85 per cent against 90 per cent or above in Dubai.
“The issue was a little bit severe, due to a lot of trucks, a lot of heavy vehicles passing here. So, we have done full rehabilitation. We plan to finish by August 25.”
“The upgrade will save me a lot of time,” noted Sajeev, who drives from Sharjah to Dubai for work. “I am leaving early to catch my morning office meetings. It’s exciting to think that my commute will soon be predictable.”
The much-expected Monday reopening will mark an end of temporary disruptions and promises a more seamless journey along one of the busiest corridors. With the anticipated reopening, motorists can look forward to a smoother and more efficient commute.
