Cairo: Saudi civil defence teams have put out a fire at a facility of the Haramain high-speed train in the port city of Jeddah, an official has said.
The blaze on Thursday evening hit makeshift administrative offices in an area of 1,200 square metres next to the train station in the Jeddah’s district of Al Sulaimaniya.
“The blaze was brought under control and put out, causing no causalities,” a spokesman for the civil defence service added, according to the Saudi news agency SPA.
Last September, the same station was damaged by a fire, putting it out of service for more than two months.
The service resumed in December.
In March this year, the service was halted as part of Saudi measures to contain the spread of the new coronavirus. Journeys are due to restart next month.
The 99,000-square-metre station linked to the New King Abdul Aziz Airport can accommodate about 3,205 passengers per hour.
Launched in 2018, the Haramain train connects the holy cities of Mecca and Medina via Jeddah.
The project, the kingdom’s biggest public transport facility, aims to carry 60 million passengers annually.
