Cairo: Saudi prosecutors have said that no legal action is taken against drug takers and addicts if they seek medical treatment, a step aimed at helping their rehabilitation.

“The system of combatting drugs and psychotropic substances enhances aspects of assistance in treatment for taking, using or being addicts to drugs,” the Saudi public prosecution said, according to local media.

The prosecution added that it guarantees that no legal action is taken against the offender provided legal steps are made to request treatment.

According to the drug-combat system in Saudi Arabia, no legal action will be taken in cases of drug abuse if the offender, a family member, a wife, or a relative comes forward to request treatment for him.

“A condition for [accepting] this, the drugs or psychotropic substances in his possession are handed over or their places are specified,” the prosecution said, according to Sabq newspaper.

Drug-taking is punishable by six months to two years in prison in Saudi Arabia. A foreign offender shall be deported after serving the term.
