Abu Dhabi: Through an investment programme and huge projects in various parts of the city, Saudi Arabia is looking to double the capital Riyadh’s population and economy over the next 10 years, a top official said.

Professor Fahd bin Abdul Mohsen Al Rasheed, CEO of the Royal Commission for Riyadh, President of the Urban Communication Group, said, “with Saudi Arabia’s vision 2030, our ambition has become limitless. Through an investment programme and huge projects in various parts of the city, we are looking to double the population of Riyadh and the size of its economy over the next 10 years.”

Al Rasheed added, “The Green Riyadh project aims to achieve the sustainable use of treated water to grow more than seven million trees, equivalent to a tree for almost every inhabitant of the population, which will make Riyadh one of the greenest cities worldwide.”

Chaired by Al Rasheed, the second meeting of the official representatives (Sherpa) of the Group of Twenty was launched.

Al Rasheed pointed out that the Riyadh Art project will bring more than 1,000 pieces of art to the streets and neighborhoods of the city, and will mix the aesthetics of modern art with the rich and diverse cultural aspects of the kingdom.

The head of the G20 Urban Society Outreach Group, said that in light of the current and unprecedented conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, cities are in a stronger position to influence global politics.

Riyadh chairs the 3rd summit of the Urban Community Outreach Group, one of the G20 communication groups, which brings together cities from inside and outside the group, to discuss and form a unified position on several issues and to issue recommendations for consideration by the G20, the 1st Mayors’ summit was held in Buenos Aires 2018, and the 2nd in Tokyo 2019.
