Muscat: Oman Meteorology has predicted thunderstorms and rains in most parts of the capital, Musandam and north and south Batnah regions for today evening and tomorrow.

Rains, which are not uncommon in Oman, but not frequent in the capital side made a landfall last week as well. The rain predictions that has issued by the Civil Aviation Authority is valid for today and tomorrow.

The weather formation will see rains in Hajar mountain ranges and the towns and villages around it as well. Hajar Mountains areas including Jabal Akhdhar and Jabal Shams get frequent rainfall in comparison to the rest of Oman, that are mainly induced by local cloud formations. Oman’s Dhofar region, in the south, is perhaps the only one in the entire GCC region to get Monsoon, locally called Khareef, in June till August every year.

Last week’s rain alert that yielded rains towards the evening and night saw a fairly dry and sunny weather through the morning and till late afternoon, when the weather suddenly turned windy before the rains started. Even today, the rains and winds started in interior towns, towards afternoon, with the capital yet to call it a rainy day.

Rain-fed waterfalls

Khasab though is seeing torrential rain-fed waterfalls in its mountainous terrain, as rains started earlier in the morning today.

Sultan Al Rawahi, working with a leading hotel in Khasab said that the rains started early in the morning today. “It still looks sultry and rains may continue through the night. The weather apps are showing that the rains would continue for tomorrow as well. It will be a wonderful sight to see the rain-fed waterfalls from the mountains and the sound they make as they rush down.”

Khasab is an Omani town that borders Oman and UAE, surrounded by mountains, and known for its fjord-like craggy inlets.
