Muscat: A series of civic campaigns have been conducted by Ministry of Regional Municipality and Water Resources (MRWR) in the North Batinah towns. In the town of Liwa, Liwa Municipality organised a general cleaning campaign in cooperation with the Beah (Oman Environmental Services Holding Company S.A.O.C). The efforts of the municipality members and Beah ensured that the debris and garbage littered in and around the main town were removed, and the place was spring-cleaned.

Liwa has a bustling market place and the fortress made of white clay located near the beach is a quaint attraction to visitors to this town. MRMWR has always been at the forefront in its efforts to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Oman, through sustained cleaning campaigns as well as beautification and restoration projects.

Shinas, another coastal town, a little away from Liwa had its beaches cleaned by the Municipality team. Bags of debris, and animal carcasses were removed from the beach area as well as from the areas flanking the main street in the town. Another town in the area, Al Khaboura, had the municipality team undertake a general cleaning campaign, transporting waste and animal carcasses, from various areas across the town. The municipality workers were also seen pruning the shrubs and trees at various parks and the plants lining the roads.

The regional Municipalities maintain a pivotal role in ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of public areas in the country which it controls directly as well as through different competitive agencies engaged in this regard. The many beautification projects, landscaping, and maintenance of public and residential parks and facilities also falls under the remit of MRMWR, among its various other activities.

Recently the municipality of Al Suwaiq had organised an inspection campaign on a range of health activities to ensure that the safety measures as advised by the Supreme Committee were being followed. It is relevant to mention in this context that Dhofar Municipality, along with the department of Food Safety and Quality in Dhofar, and Royal Oman Police were engaged in a campaign to eliminate street vendors who sold and displayed food on roadsides, in unhealthy and unhygienic ways.
